How to Look Your Best for Your Virtual Meetings

It's not necessarily easy to look good on video from home. Here are a few tips of my professional tips, as an on-camera expert and celebrity makeup artist, to help you look professional and your best on Video Calls!

#1 Camera Angle I am constantly seeing people being interviewed on TV, via skype or zoom, that have their phone/ipad/laptop either in their laps or way below their eye level, and it is not flattering! The first thing you see is a double chin, neck wrinkles, a slight look up their nose and their background is the ceiling. It's important to raise your camera to eye level or just above eye level. This angle will help you keep your chin up and create a much nicer on camera look. To raise your camera level, you can use boxes or books under your computer or device. Be sure to sit about an arm's length from your laptop or device and angle the camera down to be sure you have your face centered in the shot.

#2 Lighting Good lighting is one of the best ways to look your best on camera. The most flattering light is natural light from a window that's directly in front of you. The worst light is when it is coming down onto you from above or coming from the side or behind you. To test your lighting before you are on your call, use the camera on your cell phone & flip it around so you can see yourself on the screen and then test different areas in your home that have nice lighting naturally. Once you find that spot, that's where you can consider setting up your video area, as long as the background looks good (see next tip). If you don't have a good spot with natural lighting, you can use lamps to help light your area. Place a lamp behind your laptop or phone or put a small table lamp on each side of your laptop or device. This is the most flattering light, as it evenly lights your face from both sides. The goal is to play around with the light to get the best angle so that you don't have shadows on your face.

#3 Make Sure Your Background is Free of Clutter You want to make sure the background of your camera shot is neat and clean...and free of clutter. The focus should be on you, not your messy background. Be sure to check your background before you jump on your video call.
